Starting from Zero: How to Build Your First Burlesque Look
Every burlesque performer remembers their first costume. This guide walks you through the process step by step — from concept to stage-ready look — so you can build something you're proud to perform in.
Step 1: Define Your Character
Before you buy a single thing, answer this question: Who are you on stage? Burlesque is character-driven. Your costume should express a persona, a mood, or a story. What era or aesthetic draws you? What's the tone of your act? What's your reveal sequence?
Step 2: Choose Your Foundation Piece
Every burlesque look is built around a foundation — the piece that anchors the costume and remains after the reveal layers are removed.
Step 3: Build Your Reveal Layers
- Outermost layer: What the audience sees first. Could be a robe, jacket, skirt, or full dress.
- Middle layer: The transition. Gloves, a skirt over shorts, a wrap over a corset.
- Foundation layer: What remains at the end of your act.
Step 4: Choose Your Accessories
