What Do You Wear for Latin Dance Performance?

A Latin dance performance is different from a competition and different from social dancing. You're performing for an audience — often under stage lighting, on an elevated stage, and without the structure of a competition format. Your outfit needs to serve the performance, the choreography, and the story you're telling.

Start with the Choreography

Before choosing your performance outfit, understand what the choreography demands:

• What are the biggest movements? Turns, lifts, dips, floor work?
• What's the mood and character of the piece? Sensual, dramatic, playful, powerful?
• What's the music? The costume should feel like it belongs to the music.
• Are there partner lifts or dips that require specific coverage or construction?

Dress for the Stage, Not the Studio

Stage lighting changes everything. Colors that look beautiful in the studio can wash out under stage lights. Embellishment that seems excessive in person becomes necessary on stage.
