Do You Have to Wear Heels for Pole Dancing?
No — many pole dancers train barefoot, especially when learning climbs, inversions, and grip-dependent moves. Skin contact with the pole is essential for many techniques, and shoes can interfere with that.
However, heels are standard for performance, competition, and choreography-focused styles like exotic pole and contemporary pole. They're also widely used in training to build strength and coordination in heels.
What Kind of Heels Do Pole Dancers Wear?
Pole dancers wear platform heels specifically designed for performance. These are different from fashion heels in several important ways:
- Higher platforms reduce the actual incline on the foot, making extreme heights wearable
- Non-slip rubber outsoles provide grip on stage and studio floors
- Cushioned insoles support extended wear
- Durable synthetic uppers (usually patent finish) withstand the demands of training and performance
- Open toe designs allow toe grip on the pole
