Corset | Performance Glossary
A corset is a structured, boned garment worn around the torso to shape and cinch the waist. It is fastened at the front with a busk (hook-and-bar closure) and laced at the back for adjustable fit. Corsets are a staple of burlesque, cabaret, drag, and historical performance costuming.
Corset Types
Overbust
Covers the bust through the hips. Can be worn as a standalone top. Maximum silhouette impact.
Underbust
Sits below the bust. Worn over or under other garments. More versatile for layering.
Fashion Corset
Decorative, lighter construction. Not designed for significant waist reduction. Best for aesthetic use.
Boning Types
Steel boning provides the most structure and waist reduction — standard for performance and waist training corsets. Spiral steel allows more flexibility for movement. Plastic boning is found in fashion corsets and provides minimal structure.
