Grip Aid | Performance Glossary
A grip aid is any product used by performers to increase traction, reduce slipping, or improve contact between skin, costume, or footwear and a performance surface — including poles, floors, and shoe soles.
Types of Grip Aid
Liquid Grip
Applied to hands, arms, or legs. Dries to a tacky finish. Standard for pole dance. Washes off with water.
Grip Spray
Sprayed onto shoe soles or floors to prevent slipping. Essential for smooth-soled performance heels on slick stages.
Rosin
Powdered pine resin used by ballet dancers and gymnasts. Applied to shoe soles or floors for traction.
Grip Pads
Adhesive non-slip pads applied to shoe soles. Reusable and discreet. Good for one-off performances on unfamiliar stages.
Safety Note
Always test grip aids in rehearsal before using them in performance. Some products can make surfaces too sticky, which can cause falls or joint strain. The right amount of grip varies by surface, temperature, and performance style.
