Platform Heel | Performance Glossary
A platform heel is a shoe or boot featuring a raised platform under the toe box (the front of the sole), in addition to the heel at the back. The platform reduces the effective pitch — the angle your foot sits at — making taller heels significantly more comfortable and stable to wear.
How It Works
A 6" heel with a 2" platform has an effective pitch of 4" — meaning your foot only angles at 4", not 6". This is why platform heels feel dramatically more comfortable than stilettos of the same listed height.
Platform heights typically range from 0.5" to 3"+. The higher the platform, the more comfortable the heel — but also the more balance and ankle strength required.
Common in Performance
Platform heels are the standard for pole dance, drag, burlesque, and festival performance. They allow performers to wear 6"–8"+ heels comfortably for extended sets. Most performance heels sold at Stage Wear Shop feature platforms of 1.5"–3".
