Corset Care Guide
A quality corset is a long-term investment. Proper cleaning, lacing technique, and storage will keep your corset structurally sound and looking pristine through hundreds of performances.
Quick Reference
Washing
Spot clean only — never machine wash steel-boned corsets
Drying
Air dry flat — never hang or tumble dry
Storage
Store flat or loosely rolled — never folded
Breaking In
Season new corsets gradually — 1–2 hours per day for 1–2 weeks
Cleaning Your Corset
Steel-boned corsets cannot be submerged in water — the bones will rust and the structure will warp. Always spot clean and air out after wearing.
Air out after every wear
Hang loosely (not by the laces) in a well-ventilated area for several hours before storing. This prevents moisture buildup and odor.
Spot clean with a damp cloth
Use a clean cloth dampened with cool water and a tiny drop of mild soap. Gently blot — never scrub. Work from the outside of the stain inward.
Rinse the spot with a clean damp cloth
Remove all soap residue with a second clean damp cloth. Soap left in fabric attracts dirt and can degrade materials over time.
Air dry completely before storing
Lay flat on a clean towel. Never store a damp corset — moisture causes rust on steel bones and mildew on fabric.
Lacing & Wearing
Lacing Tips
- Always loosen laces fully before putting on or removing
- Lace from top and bottom toward the waist — never top to bottom only
- Leave 2–4 inches of gap at the back when new
- Never yank laces — tighten gradually and evenly
- Replace laces when they fray — frayed laces snap under tension
Breaking In a New Corset
- Wear for 1–2 hours per day for the first 1–2 weeks
- Tighten only to comfort — no pain, no pressure points
- The corset will gradually mold to your body shape
- Skipping seasoning causes bones to warp and fabric to stress
Storing Your Corset
Store flat or loosely rolled
Folding a corset creases the boning channels and can permanently bend steel bones.
Use a breathable bag
A cotton or muslin garment bag allows airflow and prevents moisture buildup. Avoid plastic bags.
Keep laces loosened
Store with laces fully loosened to relieve tension on the grommets and fabric.
Avoid humidity
Store in a cool, dry place. Humidity causes rust on steel bones and mildew on fabric linings.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
✗ Machine washing — destroys steel bones, warps structure, and shrinks fabric. Always spot clean only.
✗ Skipping seasoning — wearing a new corset at full tightness immediately causes bones to warp and fabric to tear.
✗ Folding for storage — permanently bends steel bones and creases boning channels. Always store flat or rolled.
✗ Storing damp — causes rust on steel bones and mildew on lining. Always air dry completely first.
✗ Yanking laces tight — stresses grommets and can tear the lacing panel. Always tighten gradually and evenly.
